Evaluating HVAC Systems & Implementing Improvements

As Governors throughout the region have deferred the decision of whether to re-open schools for in-person learning or return to a remote learning environment in the fall to local school districts, School Superintendents, Business Administrators, Boards of Education, Facilities Professionals and Educators everywhere have been left on their own to determine the ability of their school buildings to maintain a safe learning environment. The ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force has published guidance for Schools and Universities that represent industry best practices for mitigating COVID-19 transmission in the school environment, but the technical document leaves many educators asking “How do we interpret this, where do we start, and how do we proceed?”

Becht Engineering BT, Inc. has licensed professional engineers and skilled HVAC system designers with decades of expertise specifically in the design of K-12 schools and universities that can assist school districts and universities in evaluating the 6 primary areas that ASHRAE recommends addressing:

  • Inspection and Maintenance
  • Ventilation
  • Filtration
  • Air Cleaning
  • Energy Use Considerations
  • Water System Precautions

We can assist in evaluating the existing systems to determine the current filtration and outside air capabilities, make recommendations for how to increase ventilation rates and increase filtration levels while still maintaining indoor temperature conditions, and establish appropriate maintenance protocols for use throughout the school year. Where the capabilities of the existing systems are limited or constrained, we can provide guidance on appropriate alternative and supplemental systems that can help mitigate transmission risks.
