Eric Collins on Bell Works

Eric Collins, PE, Division Manager at Becht Engineering BT, Inc., was published in this month's edition of Architectural Record in the article, “Bell Works by Alexander Gorlin Architects”. Becht Engineering developed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection designs for the various infrastructure improvements and modifications that were required to re-position and renovate the $200 million, 2 million square foot mixed-use Bell Works complex in Holmdel, New Jersey.

Becht designed infrastructure improvements including replacement of the original HVAC systems new energy-recovery ventilation units and one of the largest water-cooled VRF systems in the United States, all new plumbing infrastructure for the renovated office and retail spaces, consolidation and upgrade of the office and retail electrical distribution infrastructure, renovation of the core building services and toilet rooms, and master-planning of the MEP&FP approaches and development of the building standards for the subsequent tenant improvement projects.

The re-positioning of the Bell Works project from a pure office occupancy to a mixed-use “Metroburb” required Becht to design numerous system improvements to bring the building up to current code, including most notably a massive smoke evacuation system to exhaust the enormous central atrium.
